I love finding books that have engaging illustrations and fun rhymes, but books that are also edifying are even better! We've been reviewing T is for Tree: A Bible ABC and it has all the things I look for in a good children's book...fun, engaging, AND edifying...woohoo!
T is for Tree: A Bible ABC is a children's book written and illustrated by Connie L. Meyer and published by Reformed Free Publishing Association. The book itself is hardback and seems relatively sturdy. So far, it has withstood my children who, for whatever reason, take it as a personal challenge to test the shelf life and durability of any book they touch.
One of the first things I noticed about T is for Tree is the illustrations. I absolutely love the illustrations in this book. I was pleasantly surprised when I looked to see who the illustrator was...the author and the illustrator are one in the same! All I can think of is, "Wow, how awesome to be so gifted in both areas!" The artist in me shares an extra appreciation for the creative aspect of illustrating (and authoring!) a children's book.
So the illustrations are great...what about the written aspect? While T is for Tree is intended for ages 3-6, I found myself enjoying the simplicity and subtlety of God's word. I do find the verbiage to be more suitable to the latter end of the age range or for children who are well acquainted with poetic styled writing.
Of course, I love that scripture is included with each letter that's covered. I think the author did a great job matching scriptures to the associated words. The scriptures used are from the King James (Authorized) Version. I do wish they had used a more kid-friendly translation for the scriptures but it didn't take much to pull out the kid's bibles to look them up.
My eldest daughter enjoys reading T is for Tree to her younger siblings. It's simple yet just challenging enough to keep her engaged. And, of course, she loves being able to read the books for storytime every now and then! My little ones enjoy listening as they recognize aspects and scriptures that we've read in the Bible. And true to form, the illustrations were a big hit with all of them!
