I recently had the opportunity to review The Starfall Home Membership from Starfall Education Foundation. This online subscription has been pivotal in helping me to establish a realistic homeschool routine for my 4 kiddos. Today I'm going to share with you how we use Starfall in our homeschool with 4 different schedules.
Juggling 4 different homeschool schedules definitely has it's challenges. With grades ranging from pre-k to 2nd grade, it's not always feasible to combine lessons. So, what do you do then? For me, I'm always looking for ways to keep my children engaged academically while still giving them the individual attention they need.
This is where Starfall has had the greatest impact for us. Not only is it educational, but my kids LOVE it. They ask me everyday if they can "play the star game." Particularly my 4-year-old and 5-year-old. But to my pleasant surprise, all of my kids have benefited from Starfall..with the exception of my 5-month-old of course.
It has served really well as an online preschool and Pre-K curriculum. I love that multiple subjects are covered in a variety of ways (ie. game, song, ebook, etc.) While my preschoolers may be working on identifying colors, my Pre-K'er might be indentifying letter sounds. I like being able to choose an area of focus if I need to.
My 2-year-old loves the math songs section. She's currently able to count to 10, so, she enjoys singing along with these songs. She's particularly fond of "The Zero Song" and loves to show me how she can identify the numbers as they pop up on the screen. She also likes the "Today is Monday" song.
The other day I heard all of the kids singing "Today is Wednesday, Today is Wednesday. Wednesday Soup, Tuesday Spaghetti, Monday String Beans..." I was wondering what they were singing until I saw my 2-year-old watching it on the Starfall App. They are learning the days of the week and don't even realize it! I'll admit the songs are super catchy.
I'll usually have her on a touch screen device using the Starfall App because she hasn't quite learned how to navigate the mouse yet. This makes choosing her activities of choice much easier for her. Plus, she feels like a big kid learning like her brother and sisters ;-)
My 4-year-old is probably the one who enjoys Starfall the most. He loves all things educational, so, naturally, he's drawn to learning games. With Starfall, he spends the most time exploring the letters and numbers sections.
He really enjoys learning the new words that are introduced in the letter sections. He'll listen to them a couple times and then repeat them back. I've noticed a significant increase in his vocabulary since we've started using Starfall, as well as, his ability to read phonetically.
My 5-year old is our soon-to-be Kindergartener! Wow! I'll officially have 2 students enrolled in our homeschool academy. Starfall has really encouraged her to engage in the learning process on her level. She has an older sister she looks up to and doesn't quite understand why she can't do the same work her sister does.
This online learning curriculum has helped her dramatically in this area. Of course, she has no qualms when she gets to learn with "the star game" while sister does boring ol' papers with mom!
7-Year-Old (2nd Grade)
I didn't anticipate my 2nd grader benefiting from Starfall but, once again, I was surprised to learn that they actually have something for her! I was really pleased to see a wide variety of advanced math skills.
It was great to see that there were options available to challenge her at her 2nd grade level. It also makes a good alternative for younger kids that may need more of a challenge.
I personally was really excited to see the geometry and measurement section. CONFESSION TIME...I really really REALLY...don't like math...like at all! So, I'm always looking for fun ways to teach math concepts. It makes it more enjoyable for all of us! This section of Starfall has some fun interactive ways of teaching these math concepts...which I'm super grateful for!
The Starfall Home Membership from Starfall Education Foundation has really helped this mama to juggle my 4 homeschool schedules. While I'm helping my eldest with one thing, I have one or two....or three (hee hee) of the others learning through the Starfall App. Then we just rotate as necessary. Thankfully we have enough devices to accomodate because they all love it that much!
