We are major arts and crafts lovers in our home. So, reviewing the Super Beads Mega Pack from Zirrly was an exciting time for us! Aside from the awesome creative opportunities, there was a nostalgic element to them as well. If you remember the beads that you had to iron to get them to stick together, you'll love these. It's essentially the same thing...just a whole lot safer! =)
Zirrly has a nice selection of Super Beads projects. For ours, we decided to go with the Mega Pack to expand our options a bit. It came with 4 different design templates which we actually ended up using. Now, the big claim with these particular beads is that they're supposed to fuse with just a few spritzes of water. No ironing...no gluing! And us mothers can take a collective sigh of relief.....**Ahhhh**
The suggested age range for the Super Beads Mega Pack is 5+. My 4-year-old and my 2-year-old both participated but they're used to doing these kinds of projects and I was supervising the entire time. I liked that they were all able to participate together and the older girls even helped the younger ones with their projects. While the younger ones eventually lost interest, my 7 and 5-year-old absolutely loved it!
Dija decided to use the cupcake template for her first project and Khloe chose the apple. The boards that are used to hold the design together seemed to hold the beads pretty snug. The design templates didn't want to stay put but I found if you don't lift the board it's not really an issue.
Tip: Pour your beads into an open container. We used a cake pan that freely spun around Lazy Susan style. It'll make it so much easier to dig out the colors you need and makes it easier for multiple hands to reach in!
Once their projects were completed, they were super excited to get to spray them down. The Mega Pack came with two mini spray bottles to spray the designs and help the beads fuse together. I really liked that I was able to allow them to complete their own projects. I didn't have to worry about them burning themselves or gluing beads to my table.
Khloe was the first to finish up and she was so proud of her apple...look at that smile! She sprayed about 4-5 sprays, drained any excess water, and we allowed it to dry overnight. I think you only have to let it dry like 30 minutes or so but they did theirs right before bed so we just let them sit until morning.
The beads fused together surprisingly well. We had to tug a little bit to get them to lift off of the board and it didn't pull apart at all. Dija's cupcake lost a few pieces but she didn't spray hers down as much as Khloe did. So, I'd say make sure you spray the entire design thoroughly enough to cover each bead.
