I knew that starting a business from home was going to be tricky with 5 kids but I didn't anticipate the struggles that closely followed. When I was given the opportunity to review Balancing Diapers and Deadlines from Lisa Tanner Writing, I knew right away it was something I needed.
Meeting A Need
If you've been following for any length of time, you know my husband was recently diagnosed with a genetic heart condition. While this wasn't my initial reason for starting a business from home, it has definitely upped my motivation for success.
Even if I'm able to just lighten the load for my husband...I'm happy. But how am I going to accomplish this between 5 kids, homeschooling, activities, ministry, and helping my hubby run HIS business? See my dilemma?
One of the struggles of running a business from home is being able to properly prioritize. This is especially difficult for someone like me. When I become focused on something I become like... laser-focused.
I've always had, what I call, an all-or-nothing personality. So when I commit to doing something I put all of me into it...or not at all. I learned very quickly that this can be a hindrance when it comes to fulfilling the many responsibilities we have as homemakers.
There are simply too many things to focus on them all at one time. It takes strategy and intentionality to succeed. That's where the Balancing Diapers and Deadlines course has helped me as a work-at-home mom.
Balancing Diapers and Deadlines
Lisa Tanner has a special gift for speaking to the hearts of moms. Her experience and understanding permeates the pages and you can't help but be comforted by her words.
Her course Balancing Diapers and Deadlines is an online course thats focuses on time management and productivity. The lessons are straight to the point and each one closes with a baby step. This is just one simple step to help move you towards your goal.
One of the things I love about this course is how absolutely practical the lessons are. There are no crazy, unrealistic expectations. From foundation to fruition, it addresses the things we face daily as mothers and businesswomen.
Strategy has played a big part in the progress I've seen from this course. Being strategic with my time and my family's time has made a huge difference. I didn't realize how much time we were actually wasting until we started planning out our days.
I'll be honest, our days don't always go as planned. In fact, they rarely go EXACTLY as planned. But having that blueprint has made it easier to get back on track when our plan gets sidetracked.
Whereas, we would just fly by the seat of our pants (so to speak) now we just readjust and we're still able to have a productive day. No more wasting precious time trying to figure out what we need to do!
Intentionality is, in my opinion, directly aligned with strategy. Being intentional with our time and our actions have helped tremendously in facilitating progress not just in my business but it the quality of our time together as a family.
In Lisa's course, she addresses in great depth the various responsibilies that moms have in the home. Balancing these responsibilities has been a struggle for me because I struggle with perfectionism.
But being intententional about assigning specific chores and responsibilies to each of my children has helped greatly to lighten my load. Yes, sometimes the results are less than stellar but more is getting done because there are more hands.
Being intentional, down to the very food you eat, saves an incredible amount of time and ultimately improves the productivity of the time you do have.
I'm currently working through the meal planning section of Lisa's course and I'm so excited to start implementing the tips she's given.
Most importantly, you don't have to sacrifice your family, your home, or your sanity to do it. You can have a flourishing business AND a flourishing home! Who knew? Strategy and intentionality. If you're strategic and intentional in everything that you do, you'll begin to see the growth and progress that you desire.

I'm extremely grateful for the wisdom that I've been able to glean from Balancing Diapers and Deadlines. I haven't even completed the course yet and I've already gained so much from it.
I'm making great strides in my business, and that's awesome! But even more awesome is the fact that we're doing it together as a family.
As a result of this course, my family has a greater understanding of what it is (and why it is) that I'm doing what I'm doing. My kids have even joined me in my business venture and are contributing their thought, ideas, and insights! We are well on our way to facilitating my (now our) goal of helping to lighten daddy's load.
Until next time,
